I spent two weeks researching this cute little red roadster, only to discover it is just a unique toy, and a Knock-off at that.
At first I was under the impression it could be a Jaguar. but I couldn't find this exact shape and design. The models that had that sharp, angular body front and hood were convertibles with no roof. This was a coupe. However, when I did see a Jaguar that was a coupe, the fenders over the tires skirted right down over the tires. But not on this model!
In my second week of research I ran into some Mercedes Benz cars, and realized that if I stayed in the 1930s there were some models that did almost have this shape. There were more coupes, but the lines were not quite so angular, and the fenders just did not match.
My cousin's friend, Tyler, who has been working on my car that fall, took a look at this model, and said he leaned towards the German make - Mercedes, but he couldn't pin it down either.
After Christmas my brother Ernie called from Winnipeg, and when I described this mystery, he asked me to email him some photos. Before long he phoned again, and said that this was a definite Knock-off from China. As a diesel mechanic he has worked with many vehicles. AND he had a great big compendium (book) which had every vehicle from the early 1930s to the present in it.
It is obvious to me now, that this red roadster is not going to appeal to serious collectors. But it might be the perfect toy for a child with an eye for a good looking sports car. The silver coloured fenders and headlights are rather fragile-looking, so I would discourage playing with it in the sandbox or in any way that would break them off. It might be fun to imagine driving a car like this; making up stories for your own entertainment - or, even to share with others. :)
By the way, the doors open, so you can peek inside and imagine yourself sitting in this sleek sports car. It is 4 3/4 inches long (12 cm), just about 2 inches wide, (4.5cm), and weighs about (3.4 oz.) or 100 gm. It is also an odd scale size, 1:38. Whoever designed this little toy, was working from imagination more than an original car model.
